Manual of accounting - Narrative reporting 2012

Guidance for UK companies on the 'front half' of financial statements (previously known as ‘Manual of accounting – Management reports and governance’)

Order now

Law and regulation require all UK companies to prepare reports to accompany their annual financial statements. These narrative reports (often referred to as the 'front half' of the annual report) provide financial and non-financial information to support the information in the financial statements. In addition to meeting certain minimum disclosure requirements, they give each company the opportunity to present an integrated and comprehensive picture of its business, and how it is run, to the capital markets and other user groups. The quality of this narrative reporting is an area of increasing focus of government, regulators and of the financial community more broadly.

The Manual contains guidance applicable to all sizes and types of UK companies regardless of the GAAP under which their financial statements have been prepared. It deals with the legal requirements applying to the directors' report, including the business review. For quoted companies, it covers the directors' remuneration report and, for listed companies, the UK Corporate Governance Code. The ASB's non-mandatory guidance for the operating and financial review is also discussed in detail. The Manual also contains many new good practice examples of narrative reporting.

Written by PwC’s UK Assurance Risk & Quality team, the Manual includes practical advice based on our work advising the firm's clients, partners and staff. The book will be of particular interest to finance directors, accountants, legal practitioners, financial advisors and auditors.

This book supports PwC's two main volumes dealing with the accounting and legal requirements concerning IFRS and UK GAAP:
