Recession is a public sector issue

17/06/2009

The recession is as much an issue for the public sector as it is for private companies in the region, according to sector specialists at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) LLP in the Midlands. The firm has recently strengthened its team of public sector specialists to provide support to local authorities, health bodies and other public sector organisations across the Midlands.

In addition to the firm’s strong client base in auditing and value for money work in local government, health and housing, the firm’s public sector team provides a range of specialist services. These services provide advice on everything from people management to how to structure finances efficiently and effectively for large scale capital projects.

Michael Kitts, partner, who has recently stepped up to the position of public sector lead at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in the Midlands, says:

“The recession is a growing issue for a wide range of public sector organisations in the Midlands. Higher levels of joblessness place a host of emotional and financial pressures on households in the region and public sector bodies are often called upon to help by providing access to benefits or other practical support services.

“At a time when demand for services is growing, many local authorities and other public sector organisations are experiencing a dip in income from the usual funding streams and private sector sources. In many cases, this is forcing them to review their systems and services in order to identify ways to improve efficiency, without cutting services.”

Prior to joining PricewaterhouseCoopers in 2000, Michael Kitts worked as a finance director for Amber Valley Borough Council in Derbyshire - experience which has given him a valuable insight into the pressures that many local authorities are now facing. He adds:

“As for the rest of the economy, public sector organisations are facing unprecedented challenges. There is much that can and is being done to improve their position – both financially and in terms of their ability to deliver major lasting improvements that will benefit the region’s economy in the longer term.”

Further strengthening the firm’s local team of public sector specialists, Richard Bacon has recently moved to the Midlands from the West Country as lead partner for the firm’s public sector assurance practice.  He provides a broad range of assurance services across the public sector, including internal and external audit, financial review and due diligence, project assurance, and governance-related services.

Michael Kitts, partner and public sector lead at PricewaterhouseCoopers in the Midlands, concludes:

“It is dangerous to overlook the importance of public sector services during the recession. These organisations play an important role in supporting local communities and ensuring the regional economy is ready and well-positioned to respond to the upturn when it arrives.”
