Company background:

Andrew Weir Insurance Company Limited ("Andrew Weir") was incorporated on 29 February 1940 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Andrew Weir & Co and forms part of the Andrew Weir Group. Andrew Weir wrote general marine and aviation business on both a direct and reinsurance basis until 1991 and ceased underwriting all classes of business on 20 November 1991. Richard Boys-Stones and Colin Bird were appointed Joint Provisional Liquidators on 12 November 1992. A Scheme of Arrangement became effective on 13 April 1994 and Richard Boys-Stone and Colin Bird became Scheme Administrators. They were subsequently replaced as Scheme Administrators by Paul Evans and Nigel Rackham.

On 25 March 2002 the Scheme Creditors of Andrew Weir voted in favour of a Special Resolution put before them by the Scheme Administrators, which was designed to bring about the early closure of the Scheme. The implementation of the Special Resolution meant that all liabilities, including those which had not finally matured, were valued as at the valuation date, 31 December 2001. Scheme creditors had until the bar date, 25 September 2002, to submit details of their claims on a claim form provided to them. All liabilities have now crystallised and the final distribution of 49.65% was made in March 2005.

Planned approach / next steps:

The Scheme of Arrangement terminated on 20 December 2005 when the company was wound up by an Order of The Court. The Official Receiver was appointed as liquidator at that time.
