What skills we look for

What skills we look for

It's important to us that you're adequately informed about the format and competencies against which you'll be assessed in your interview. This will allow you to perform to the best of your ability. At PwC all our people need to demonstrate certain core skills, which we refer to as our 'Global Core Competencies'. These are assessed throughout the application process, and candidates should make themselves aware of these, and how their own experiences may demonstrate each competency.

But remember to start your preparation well in advance and consider your personal experience in each of these areas. Plan to offer the interviewer an insight into your particular abilities and/or achievements in each area.

We’ve listed the competencies we assess at each interview below. Please make sure you check the selection process pages to see if there are any variations for the programme that you’ve applied for.

First Interview Competencies

Communicate with Impact and Empathy

  • Being able to communicate clearly and articulately is a vital skill for all our people. So too are listening and influencing skills.
  • We'll be assessing your ability to express yourself fluently and persuasively; to respond in a considered and succinct way to questions asked.

Acquire and Apply Commercial and Technical Expertise

  • It's important to develop and apply a high level of technical/professional skills and knowledge. Due to the ever changing business environment it's also important to keep up to date with the latest business and relevant industry trends. We'll therefore be assessing your knowledge and understanding of current business issues.

A good place to start would be to try and keep up to date with what's happening in the press; read newspapers and business magazines and/or on-line commercial articles. Please visit our hints & tips page for further ideas about how to improve your business awareness.

Lead and Contribute to Team Success

  • Striving for excellence through working as part of successful teams is key to our work. We'll be looking for evidence of where you've worked in teams and contributed to your team's success.

Be Open Minded, Agile with Change and Practical

  • Changing business needs require us to approach change positively and adjust to new work structures and processes while still delivering quality work. We'll be asking you to talk about when you've had to deal with changing priorities/workloads and how you dealt with this.

Manage Projects and Economics

  • Delivering work to high quality standards is essential to success at PwC. We encourage staff to take responsibility to deliver results and solutions to our clients.
  • We'll be asking you to tell us about how you've managed your workload and utilised appropriate resources to meet deadlines.

Demonstrate Courage and Integrity

  • Honesty and integrity are core to our business and therefore we look for these values in our employees.
  • It’s important our people challenge the questionable behaviour of others so we’ll be looking for evidence of when you’ve had to address problems or voice your concerns.
