Deliver practical, insightful advice that gets straight to the heart of the big business issues. And make a real impact on the bottom line. Whichever part of Consulting you join, you’ll help businesses of all shapes and sizes grow faster and work smarter. And whatever issues you’re tackling on their behalf, you’ll deliver results they can measure and a standard of client service that’s truly second to none.
Our Consulting practice was launched in 2001. But the truth is our work in this area goes back way beyond that. More exciting than our past, however, are our ambitious plans for the future which will see us treble our revenues over the next four years. Especially since they’re plans that you could soon be part of.
Integrated into many different parts of our business, our consultants are organised into specialist teams. Each team works with household names in a diverse range of industries – from big-name broadcasters and high-street banks to multinational telecoms operators and energy companies.
If you’re talented, determined and serious about a career in business, we believe Consulting can offer you the best possible start. Consultants are organised into different areas. As a graduate, you can choose to start your career in Management Consulting, building a range of core skills on a two-year structured programme where you’ll experience the full range of what we do, developing your skills in all industries. This will give you a taste of what it’s like to help clients drive innovation and growth, manage cost and operate effectively. At the same time it will help you decide where you want to specialise within Consulting. Or, if you’d rather specialise from the beginning, you can join one of three consulting practices straight away – Strategy, Economics or Sustainability and Climate Change,
In Economics Consulting you’ll work alongside and learn from experienced economists who use their expertise to tackle complex business and policy issues.
In Risk Consulting you'll help our clients improve their approach to risk management and valuation issues by reviewing valuation methodologies, risk metrics, counter-party risk, stress testing methodologies and model validation issues.
In Strategy Consulting you’ll address the key strategic issues on the minds of CEOs and senior executives. The advice you’ll offer covers both corporate strategy – such as market entry, competitive strategy and organisation structure – and Merger & Acquisition strategy, helping private equity investors with the strategic aspects of deals.
In Sustainability & Climate Change Consulting you'll help clients embed sustainability in their strategies and throughout their organisations, while making the most of the opportunities for innovation and growth created by a world economy that’s becoming greener.
London based Consulting vacancies will open on 3 September 2012, for full time graduate opportunities starting in 2013. London Internship opportunities in Consulting starting in 2013, will open on 8 October 2012. There are deadlines associated with these vacancies so we would encourage you to apply in a timely manner to avoid disappointment.
Next steps:
We help organisations solve tricky problems using economics. They may be developing a new strategy, facing a regulator or engaged in litigation. Typically we work for senior executives in the private and public sector in high profile situations. They need an insight, or analysis, to help them work through a difficult decision or to help them build a case to convince another party of a course of action. That’s where we come in. We work with them to marshal the evidence and develop the arguments. And we want to leave our clients stronger - we want to increase the value of their organisation, and to transfer our knowledge to them.
As a graduate economist, you’ll be able to work across all three of our key areas:
Providing advice in competition and State Aid investigations, and commercial disputes using:
Designing and implementing market reform across key sectors of the economy by:
Identifying opportunities for growth:
For more information, our corporate economics website gives a real flavour of what we do and who we are. You’ll find examples of our recent publications, videos of members of the practice (and others we work with, such as academics) discussing hot topics in economics, and descriptions of our practice areas. Click here to visit our site.
Next steps:
Early involvement in a project team means you’ll contribute ideas and analysis to high-profile projects. Before long you’ll be meeting clients face-to-face, tackling their issues first-hand and helping us win business.
You'll get involved in a wide range of projects and every one is different. Our clients will typically set an ‘exam’ question for you to consider and you’ll spend time, as a team, framing the question in greater depth. You’ll help to give them a clearer picture of what success looks like, how to value it, and advise them on how to achieve it. Examples of projects you'll work on could be similar to those we've completed below:
Next steps:
We’ll want you to learn and improve every day – we believe we offer some of the best learning opportunities; including hands-on coaching from more experienced colleagues, a dedicated mentoring scheme, regular ‘lunch and learn’ sessions on projects and methods, and seminars with academic and client speakers.
And we’ll offer support for specialist academic economics and financial post-graduate qualifications (such as diplomas, part-time economics programmes and the Chartered Financial Analyst program), and a full suite of consultancy courses (ranging from presentations and report-writing, to project management). You'll also have the opportunity to go on an induction course when you join at two levels – the firm as a whole, and the economics practice specifically. That way you'll get to meet a wide network of people and understand more about your colleagues in PwC.
As your experience grows, so will your exposure to client projects across a wide range of skill areas, sectors and locations across our global network – we won’t ask you to specialise early. In fact, we encourage mobility within PwC, whether in the UK or overseas through secondments. And that means you’ll have plenty of opportunity to find your niche and carry on progressing.
Next steps:
You’ll need to share our passion for applying economics knowledge in real-life situations. It calls for an agile, creative, enquiring mind that can spot those vital, telling connections between economic data. And as you’ll be writing reports and giving presentations, outstanding communication skills are also essential. We expect people to give a point of view, to be curious and to be passionate in everything they do. Academic credentials are important, but not enough in their own right. We’re looking for something extra from your work experience, sporting achievements, hobby or personal background. People who take personal responsibility, for their own contribution, as well as for their contribution to the team as a whole.
Next steps:
Along with our clients, we believe that the best teams are diverse. Therefore we want the best people to shine through whatever their background. We think carefully about how we recruit, so we bring diversity of perspective to everything we do. We come from over 20 countries and speak 20 languages, and we believe that our values distinguish us from the rest (see our ‘Who We Are Statement’ and our Code of Conduct for a summary of what this means). We believe in an open, collaborative and supportive environment, and we value a healthy work/life balance.
Our team members love working in a dynamic learning environment. We always strive to improve on what we do, through innovation and an entrepreneurial spirit. You’ll be supported along the way through mentoring, learning and development on the job, and specialist economics and consultancy courses.

How many people work in the PwC Economics team?
There are over 100 people in our Economics and Policy team in London and of those approximately 60 are economists; the balance is made up of policy consultants who bring a variety of skills and experience to our team. We’re also one of 12 economics practices in our global network.
What kind of projects can I expect to work on?
As a new graduate, you’ll be able to work with private and public sector clients across our three key areas of focus (Investigations and Disputes, Market reform, and Growth). That way, you’ll be guaranteed project experience across a range of different sectors early and can find out what you’re interested in.
How does working at PwC compare to a boutique economics consultancy?
We offer the best of a boutique consultancy, with the added benefits that come with working in one of the world’s leading professional services firms. This means that you’ll get the opportunity to work with colleagues and clients on a truly global basis, whether on project based work or international secondments. You’ll also work with a diverse group of individuals, including economists and other like-minded individuals (strategists, operational consultants, and many more).
How would you describe the culture of the economics practice?
We pride ourselves on being a meritocratic, sharp, intellectual, fair, and supportive team who thrive on being success oriented. Most of all, we love what we do, and we have fun doing it. We all take responsibility for contributing to shaping our practice, and we foster a sense of entrepreneurship – everybody has a role in identifying and capitalising on new business development opportunities and we see that as an integral part of our work. We come from a diverse range of backgrounds, and we work hard to balance this with other aspects of our lives.
What do you offer in terms of training and will I progress?
As a PwC Economics Consultant you’ll be supported by the best in learning and development – from specialist seminars, courses and toolkits in technical economics, to training in the core consulting skills. When you start, a team of colleagues will show you the ropes, and a people manager will work with you to guide you throughout your career with us. We offer regular ‘lunch and learns’ in which a member of our team gives an informal lecture on a recent project or topical economic issue. We also offer support for external qualifications like the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) or post-graduate diplomas.
Do I need to specialise?
We won’t ask you to specialise if you join our graduate programme. In fact, as your experience grows, so will your exposure to client projects across a wide range of skill areas, sectors and locations across our global network. We also encourage mobility within PwC, whether in the UK or overseas through secondments. And that means you’ll have plenty of opportunity to find your niche and carry on progressing.
What are the hours like?
We encourage a sustainable work-life balance. This means that we give our clients the best service possible whilst working efficiently and effectively, leaving us time for hobbies, friends, family, and time in our communities. All in all, we encourage a balanced lifestyle in a high performance culture.
How long does the application process take?
If you’re applying as a graduate you’ll need to take some online tests first, but you should get the results within 48 hours. Do well and you’ll be invited to complete an online application form that includes competency questions. The interview process will be conducted as efficiently as possible - the overall lapse time will depend on availability of applicants and assessors.
Some of your competitors don't require me to undergo psychometric tests or group assessments. Why do you?
All of our work requires a certain level of numerical and mathematical literacy. Psychometric tests early in the recruitment process allow us to establish your quantative abilities so that during the remainder of the application process we can focus on the more diverse set of skills that you will need to be a great consultant.
Similarly, teamwork and collaboration are a necessity in our team. We have a diverse group of people in our team and work with a range of clients who bring a different set of skills and point of view to each project. Group assessments allow us to get a sense of how you work with others, which is critical given we work together in teams and with client teams.
Next steps:
Management Consulting helps some of the world’s most significant organisations become even more effective quickly. We improve the way they operate; accelerate their growth; reduce their costs; manage their risks; develop their talent and change the way they do business. In doing so, we focus on their agendas and the big issues they need to deal with, both today and in the future.
You’ll start with a comprehensive induction that involves spending six weeks at our specialist training school and two weeks getting real business experience with our clients. You’ll hone your core skills in finance, operations and business change and start to develop your network. After that you’ll join over 2,000 colleagues working with our clients, on a graduate programme that builds your understanding of PwC.
You’ll rotate across the Consulting business every three months, focussing on developing a new set of skills. At the end of each three month cycle you’ll spend a day with your colleagues, reflecting on what you’ve learned and how you’ll carry on applying and building on your knowledge.*
Our Consulting practice in Belfast is also an integral part of our business, where we deliver specific business solutions for our global clients through our ‘Centres of Excellence’ and also have outstanding opportunities for graduates. Our Centres of Excellence provide deep capability and technical knowledge that integrates itself into many different parts of the firm when delivering value to clients. Across Northern Ireland, the Centres of Excellence are split out into three sections:
NB: If you're joining the Consulting practice in Northern Ireland, your training programme will be with FoundationNI and will differ slightly.
Next steps:
When you join our programme in the UK, you’ll be joining a two year structured learning programme of about 300 graduates all with different experience. You’ll develop a core set of consulting skills whilst rotating around the consulting business, working in various industries to gain valuable experience. This will help you to understand where you want to specialise in the long term. We’ll monitor your development so you know how you are doing and where you can improve. Before you leave the programme you’ll complete an assessment to make sure the skills you have are right for the specialist area you want to join.
You’ll typically find yourself working as part of a team of anything from five to 30 people. You’ll spend a lot of time with clients dealing with issues as they arise and gain valuable exposure to different types of projects and industries. You’ll carry out detailed analysis and help make recommendations that change their businesses. This experience, combined with deep technical training and an emphasis on continual learning, will equip you with the skills to really make a difference.
If you're joining in our Belfast office then you'll join our Foundation NI graduate programme. Foundation NI is a one year structured development framework where you'll develop core consulting and technical skills, providing you with an opportunity to put these skills into practice through the projects you work on and business experience. You'll be working alongside experienced professionals within a client team, which will accelerate your learning.
You’ll have exposure to a variety of projects across a number of industry sectors and be given the opportunity to develop expert skills within a chosen specialism. As part of your on-the-job training, you’ll be mentored and supported by a senior member of staff and you’ll develop additional expertise in change and project management that will be applicable across all client engagements

Market dynamics over the last two years has highlighted weaknesses in valuation and risk models and tools that have played a significant role in measuring and monitoring risk and business performance. Events over recent history have shown that risk can materialise and result in major losses and that capital needs to be prudently allocated. Firms are increasingly looking to maintain a strong capital base and are guiding their businesses towards balancing profit potential, risk and capital usage. Financial institutions also must comply with increasingly demanding new regulations relating to capital adequacy and liquidity risk.
Next steps:
You'll help our clients improve their approach to risk management and valuation issues by reviewing valuation methodologies, risk metrics, counterparty risk, stress testing methodologies and model validation issues. You can also undertake independent calculations of valuations and risk or perform model validation activities in order to highlight areas that need improving for our clients. Your skills may also be called on to design and build a methodology or model for valuation or portfolio risk purposes. You can also assist clients to embed these new tools in their operational procedures.
Next steps:
You'll ideally have a PhD in a highly numerate discipline such as:
You'll also need relevant practical experience of applying your technical knowledge, as well as having used your initiative and team-working skills during university.
Your intellect, willingness to learn, ability to build relationships, to put yourself in others’ shoes , while always making a positive impact with our clients and each other.
Next steps:
We work in a distinctive way. We combine rigorous evaluation of business issues with creative problem solving to develop mission-critical strategy for the world’s best-known organisations, as well as advising private equity investors on major transactions. And because we tailor the way we approach each of our client’s issues, it means each assignment is always different, so you’ll never get bored.
Most of our work is concentrated on two main areas:
Corporate Strategy offers a wide range of strategic advice to major international companies and organisations. Areas of focus include:
Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Strategy – a leader in itsfield, advises private equity houses, debt financing banks and companies undertaking M&A on investment opportunities. We evaluate business plans and strategies against market performance and competitor strength to help clients understand which companies are attractive acquisitions and how much to pay.
Next steps:
Our work is project-based; you’ll work on only one project at a time in your first few years, so you’ll be able to focus on the job in hand. For each project we work on, we bring together a specific team – which varies in shape and size depending on the project in question, ranging from a small team of strategists to a large multi-disciplinary team.
As an Associate, you’ll be the cornerstone of the team. We’ll value your opinion from day one and push to hear it.You’ll work alongside inspirational colleaguesand have direct exposure to clients at all levels, up to CEO and Board members. And after carrying out research, strategic analysis, modelling, interviews and practical field researchyou’ll develop strategic insights for the project, discuss them with your colleagues and present recommendations to clients. Very quickly you’ll find you’re giving our clients advice that could range from insights into growth strategy through to market entry, competitive strategy, organisation structure or Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) strategy. The broad experience you’ll gain will act a strong base for developing individual consulting skills. Right from the start, we’ll encourage you to take on as much responsibility as you can handle. We’ll value the work you do internally in areas like recruitment, training and marketing as highly as your work with clients.
Next steps:
Our two-year training programme covers key strategy skills and includes external financial and deal cycle courses. You’ll benefit from continual on-the-job mentoring and will be encouraged to invest time in your own personal development. If you’re a high achiever, we’ll consider sponsoring you to complete an MBA. We won’t ask you to specialise. Instead, you’ll work across our many industry sectors and on both M&A and Corporate Strategy projects.
Next steps:
We’re looking for talented, ambitious people. We’ll give you the tools you need to learn, and encourage you to progress quickly and promote on merit. If you’re good, you’ll get on. We look for a rare combination of razor-sharp commercial awareness, analytical skills, and the confidence and credibility to present your opinions to senior colleagues internally as well as experienced clients externally.
This isn’t a routine 9-to-5 job. Rigour and curiosity are vital if you’re to tackle the most important issues that the largest organisations in the world face. You’ll be highly motivated and ambitious, someone who’s hungry for early responsibility, client interaction and the chance to make a difference from day one.
We also look for people who bring something more to their work than their academic credentials. Like the self-discipline and team working skills that stem from a sporting background; or leadership qualities gained through work experience. The ability to speak more than one language is another big plus too.
Academics are important too. You’ll need...
Equally important will be your ability to build relationships, to put yourself in others’ shoes and make a positive impact on our clients and us, while shaping your own future. Strategy Consulting gives you a unique chance to work with the best in their field and become an exceptional business consultant fast.
Next steps:
Perform at a consistently high standard and you can expect to progress quickly up the ranks –. We offer a permanent contract, instead of a two-year, ‘up-or-out’ clause. It’s important to us, that you develop and grow, so that you can reach your full potential If our consultants leave, it’s for strategy roles in major corporates and positions in private equity houses. important to us, that you develop and grow, so that you can reach your full potential. Many Associates choose to stay in Strategy Consulting at PwC, but experience here opens up all sorts of doors. Our alumni have gone on to join private equity firms, investment banks, strategy teams at FTSE 100 companies and to complete sponsored MBAs at the world’s leading business schools.
Thanks to our sports teams and social events that range from project dinners, away days and weekly after-work drinks, you’ll enjoy a working atmosphere that’s friendly, fun and collegiate.
While the hours can sometimes be long, we certainly don’t believe in ‘face-time’. We encourage a healthy work-life balance and actively manage workloads in the office so we can meet our commitments outside of it. What’s more, you can expect to combine being office based in London with the opportunity for some travel. So you’ll need to be flexible, although we don’t expect our graduates to be forever living out of a suitcase.

At the end of each three month cycle you’ll spend a day with your colleagues, reflecting on what you’ve learned and how you’ll carry on applying and building on your knowledge.
You’ll be joining a two year structured learning programme of about 300 graduates all with different experience.
There’s more to our people than intellect alone so whether you apply through the Inspired Talent route or based on your academic track record, you’ll need to show us you have the following skills all the way through the assessment process:
There are many ways you might have developed these skills – through study, voluntary work, sport, being part of a club or a job. Think about what you’ve done and what you’ve learned from it. The more examples you have, the more you’ll stand out.
Your job description
You'll help our clients improve their approach to risk management and valuation issues by reviewing valuation methodologies, risk metrics, counterparty risk, stress testing methodologies and model validation issues. You can also undertake independent calculations of valuations and risk or perform model validation activities in order to highlight areas that need improving for our clients. Your skills may also be called on to design and build a methodology or model for valuation or portfolio risk purposes. You can also assist clients to embed these new tools in their operational procedures.
