Our purpose

We’re a hugely diverse business, bound by our global purpose - to build trust in society and solve important problems.

We employ thousands of talented people across the UK, equipping them with the skills they need to help solve our public, private, and third sector clients’ most pressing problems.

From decarbonisation and disruptive tech, to regional inequalities and changing employee expectations, we’re supporting clients across all industries to respond to a growing number of interconnected financial and non-financial challenges.

Our purpose also underpins how we work with our stakeholders, who we are as an employer, how we run our business, and the ways we contribute to society more broadly.

We focus on using our skills and resources where we can have the most impact. Guided by our purpose, we’re turning commitments into measurable action on climate and inequality. And we’ve used the World Economic Forum (WEF) metrics as a framework to provide transparency on our outcomes over time on our Integrated Reporting Hub.

“Keeping our purpose front of mind helps us to learn from our experiences and to get better at what we do.”

Kevin Ellis CBE
Senior Partner, PwC UK

“We’re proud that so many of our people are committed to using their skills and expertise to deliver a sustainable, positive impact for our clients, communities, and wider society.”

Our focus areas

Working with purpose

Our purpose is rooted in what the firm was founded to do - to build trust between a company and its stakeholders, helping capital markets and the economy to function.

We address many important problems for clients, their markets, and broader society - helping them transform, rethink risk, engage with complex tax and regulatory environments, while creating value in deals or crisis situations, and investing in high-quality audits. Our human-led, tech-powered strategy also means taking a responsible technology approach.

And we use our research and convening power to bring together perspectives and drive action on the big issues facing society.

Empowering people and communities

The way we work and our clients’ needs are evolving, so we’re empowering our people with accelerated skills development so they’re equipped for the future of work.

Our community engagement programmes enable our people to deliver social, environmental and economic benefits UK-wide - with a total community contribution of over £10m in FY23.

The demands and opportunities presented by this new era are also reflected in our approach to wellbeing, diversity and inclusion, and our action to promote social inclusion - throughout the firm and in our communities.

Reimagining a sustainable future

Our corporate sustainability strategy is designed to play our part in addressing the climate and nature crisis, and help us reimagine a sustainable future.

We’re working towards three overarching outcome-focused goals, which underpin all of our programmes and targets:

  • Driving a net zero and sustainable future for ourselves, our clients and wider society

  • Accelerating a just transition by encouraging and supporting our people to act sustainably, and influencing suppliers and society to think sustainably

  • Pioneering sustainability reporting, transparency, and good governance.
