Retail opportunities in greener goods

An upturn in green consumer spending could help local retailers survive the downturn, according to the PricewaterhouseCoopers report ‘Sustainability – are consumers buying it?’

With consumer spending falling, this report shows the majority of consumers are aware of and concerned about sustainability issues. This has led to an upturn in green shopping.

Importantly, the report reveals that most British consumers would like to buy greener in the future – 58% said they would like to buy more sustainable products than they currently do.

The report forecasts that the price premium on green products is likely to fall in the future as consumers increasingly expect such products to be made in a more sustainable way. According to Andy Lyon at PricewaterhouseCoopers in the East Midlands, producing cheaper greener goods could be an important opportunity for local retailers.

Andy Lyon, retail expert in the region, says:

“To survive the downturn, most retailers know they need to manage upward cost pressures, while keeping prices low. The green buying trend could be a timely opportunity for retailers to do something distinctive and boost sales.”
