We have been consistent supporters of Common Purpose since it was established in 1989 and instrumental in the development of their Your Turn programme since 1997. Your Turn brings together Year 9 students from a range of schools in a local area to develop their leadership and other key skills, understand crucial issues affecting their city and how they can influence change now and in the future.
Our support has extended through the UK such as Birmingham, Westminster (London), Scotland and Newcastle. This has included hosting programme days at our offices where young people aged 13-15 year olds get the opportunity to explore with PwC volunteers how financial decisions affect their lives through a variety of workshops including presentations, feedback sessions and practical activities.
Liverpool Compact EBP is one of 120 Education Business Partnerships established across the country to raise the aspirations, skills and achievements of young people as they make the transition from school to 'world of work'.
In partnership with Liverpool Compact, one of the key programmes that PwC is involved with is the Mock Interviews for Year 10 & Year 11 students, aged 14 to 16 years.
The students complete an application form and the interview is based around the contents. Volunteers give feedback to each student on their performance, so students gain an understanding of their strengths and development needs.
The students recognise the benefits and learning outcomes achieved only too clearly. A student from Bellerive Catholic School, Liverpool, said:
"I found out what an employer looks for in an interview, job opportunities and about another career. I know I need to do more within school and the community."
Our offices in Scotland organised a number of team volunteering days, one of which included a team of volunteers from the Edinburgh office working at Pentland Hills Regional Park. Fifteen volunteers took part in the challenge, which was to rebuild and replace a series of steps close to the entrance to the park.
The team worked in small groups to remove grass and weeds from the steps, then set to work either removing and rebuilding steps entirely, or repairing those less damaged.
The Pentland Hills Regional Park Rangers were delighted with the results and the steps are now much safer for the many families and hill walkers who use the park each year.
The SMART Company, a consultancy specialising in Corporate Responsibility recently completed this independent study of our community programme in Southwark . It assesses the effectiveness of our Southwark programme and draws out some best practice elements from what we have achieved in the borough over the past 15 years.
