Facilities Management (FM) typically comprises “Hard FM” (those services
associated with the fabric of a property, e.g. property maintenance, grounds
maintenance) and “Soft FM” (those services associated with activities provided
within a property e.g. catering, cleaning, security). The FM sector is
undergoing rapid change as corporate procurement policies are moving providers
toward “bundled services” (e.g. aggregation of a number of soft FM services
through one provider, either on a self delivery, JV or sub-contract basis). In
addition, changes are occurring within constituent service offerings (e.g.
regulation and competition are driving security companies to become more
professional, recognising industry-wide standards of conduct and making greater
use of electronic security).

The Professional Advisory sector covers a broad range of specialist
companies that provide professional and consultancy services. The services
provided are often project driven and outsourced because of their specialist
nature. Types of company in this sector include environmental and health
& safety consultancies, inspection, testing and certification
providers, property and infrastructure consultants, management consultancies,
engineering consultancies, accountancy practices, legal practices, and PR,
marketing and advertising agencies. Growth is often driven by legislative or
regulatory change and key challenges facing the sector include the ability to
recruit and retain appropriately qualified staff and being able to provide
international project capabilities.

Human Capital Management encompasses businesses that provide services to
recruit, retain, develop, train, educate and incentivise their workforce.
Challenges facing this sector include sourcing skilled labour, complying with
regulation and legislation, meeting employees’ changing attitude to work and
the rewards offered, and a requirement to reskill the workforce to meet the
challenges of the new economy. Historically the sector has been dominated by
the traditional recruitment agency businesses but new business models are
emerging as companies seek to differentiate their offering.

Organisations typically regard the efficient delivery of goods and services
as a critical element in their business model. Cost and performance levels are
often the key drivers behind the decision to retain in-house or outsource the
physical distribution, warehousing and logistics management functions. Today,
external service providers are increasingly sophisticated and are able to offer
solutions for all industry sectors. Such specialists provide an array of
services including, inter alia, mail/document handling, parcels, contract
logistics, freight transport, wholesaling/merchandising, equipment rental and
fleet-based maintenance services. We work closely with our Transport and Logistics
group.

Companies within the BPO sector are typically specialists, utilising new
business models to provide an economically competitive service offering, often
with enhanced service delivery. The companies are typically the beneficiaries
of the trend towards outsourcing and are sophisticated operators of the
previously considered “business critical” internal administration processes.
Types of operation now outsourced, and hence having specialist providers,
include the areas of Finance & Accounting, Human Resources, Sales &
Marketing, Payment Services, Logistics and Administrative Processing.
