The IAB Online Adspend Study, conducted in partnership with PricewaterhouseCoopers, continues to show growth in online advertising spend despite the economic downturn.

The increasing importance of online advertising is clearly illustrated when you consider that:

  • internet advertising is the only medium to show growth in H1 2009
  • online added £82m of new money in H1 2009 from H1 2008
  • in H1 2009 the online share was 23.5% overtaking all other media to be the largest format for advertising revenue

And this growth, as yet, shows no signs of slowing:

  • online adspend for the half year 2009 was £1,752m
  • spending on internet advertising grew by 4.6% year-on-year on a like-for-like basis. The advertising industry as a whole declined by a massive 16.6%
  • online’s share has grown to 23.5% for the year January – June 2009, up from 18.7% for the same period last year

The figures confirm that advertisers are continuing to see the value of online advertising to their marketing communications, despite the difficult economic conditions.
