3rd Survey of UK Pension Scheme Governance 2008 – key messages

April 2008

Pension scheme governance remains high on the agenda for many corporates and scheme trustees.  There are significant improvements in:

  • Interactions with the sponsoring employers.
  • Dealing with conflicts.
  • Managing risks.

The challenge for trustees moving forward is to continue to remain in control of the governance-related demands placed on them.  Key questions for chairs to focus on are:

  • Have you got the right governance structure for your scheme?
  • How are you dealing with the effectiveness of the Trustee Board as a whole?
  • How can you help individual trustees to enhance their skills?

The report is organised within seven key headings containing specific commentary on the findings and the trends from previous surveys:

01      Roles and responsibilities

02     Knowledge and understanding

03     Conflicts of interest and sponsor interaction

04     Accountability:  communication with members

05     Delegates and advisers

06     Compliance and risk management

07     Trustee performance.
