The findings of the 73rd CBI/PricewaterhouseCoopers financial services survey are some of the gloomiest ever. In the last decade the current level of pessimism has only been exceeded twice – as corporate defaults and accounting scandals piled up in 2003 and during the chaotic markets of 1998. The ongoing credit crunch is having a direct impact on business, and a swift resolution to the crisis is not anticipated – this quarter’s supplementary question reveals that 70% of respondents expect the crunch to last for more than six months, with 89% seeing a medium or high likelihood of further deterioration in that time.
