New additions to this issue:

This update ahead of our full forecast in November shows that despite the economic slowdown, UK hotels continued to report good growth in the first half of 2008. Hoteliers are in a much less optimistic mood, however, than at the time of our last forecast in March and expect the second half of the year and 2009 to reflect much tougher times. A poisonous mix of rising fuel prices and energy costs, an increased squeeze on consumer and corporate travel budgets and a reduction in conference revenue, especially 24 hour conference trade, are identified by hoteliers as contributing to this rapid deceleration in growth.

REITs came into existence with effect from January 2007. With a few exceptions, take up has been limited to existing quoted property investment companies, but the removal of two key barriers – shareholder limitation and owner occupation - may change this making REITs more attractive to hospitality companies. We examine the evidence.

This article looks at stadium developments in football, rugby, cricket and other sports. It evaluates the impact of stadium development on demand, and the wider potential benefits that can be achieved, as well as the risks inherent in sporting businesses. The report also covers the typical funding routes for stadium development, in the UK and Continental Europe, as well as the investment planned in future schemes.

Also, from February 2008 we have the following articles:

Our latest forecast for the hotel sector finds that while we expect a slowdown in demand and decelerating room rate growth in 2008 and 2009, we see no reason to expect a meltdown. To learn more about our forecasts, and why we don’t expect a meltdown, along with our analysis for London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Birmingham read the full article and listen to the podcast .

In our paper on sustainability in the travel and leisure sector we investigate the costs and opportunities climate change and CSR present the sector.  We also outline a framework to help companies understand both the risks and opportunities they could confront and help them ensure that the right questions are addressed.  Learn more about these issues in the full article.

Our final paper on conference and training venues finds that although there are a similar number of venues as there were in 2005, the competition within the sector is getting hotter.  With existing operators in the field investing heavily and private equity operators continuing to see opportunities, there has been a distinct flight to quality.  To learn more about which venues and brands have been enjoying strong growth, and those which have been seeing a decline and the reasons why, read our full paper.
