What can Pharma learn from the Private Equity sector?

We believe that looking at Pharma through the lens used by the private equity sector yields some valuable insights from which the bravest and most imaginative companies can learn. As an article recently published in the Harvard Business Review points out, the best private equity funds consistently deliver higher returns than the S&P 500 – and they do so because they have developed the strategies and processes needed to obtain a superior performance from the companies in which they invest, not because they engage in manipulative or short-term tactics.

While some of these practices may depend on private ownership, many are relevant to public companies and could make Pharma much stronger. To borrow from the words of one venture capitalist to whom we talked, “Private equity isn’t about changing paradigms. But changing the way in which things are funded and done can end up getting paradigms changed.”
