International mobility insight combines the business skills, human resource expertise and technical knowledge of PricewaterhouseCoopers Human Resource Services with the academic excellence and leading-edge, practice-based research of Cranfield School of Management.

International mobility insight helps businesses meet the challenge of operating in a changing global environment by providing market research underpinned by commercial expertise to provide a framework for dealing with and assessing the business issues facing organisations.

Each of the research projects in the International mobility insight research series are described below:

  1. Understanding and avoiding barriers to mobility:

Reviews barriers to mobility, repatriation and the use of acquired skills. It focuses on career capital strategies of individuals within organisations and how this may contrast with the organisational approach. Linked corporate and individual assignee surveys examine both perspectives.
    • What are the key barriers to international mobility?
    • Is an international assignment good for a career, or a disadvantage?
    • How could organisations achieve a better alignment of individual careers and organisational human capital interests?
    • What could be done to increase expatriation and repatriation success?

  2. Measuring the value of international assignments:

Examining existing return on investment practices and developing a model which focuses on the factors critical to measuring the value from international mobility.
    • What are the soft and hard costs and benefits of international assignments?
    • To what extent are soft costs quantifiable in financial terms?
    • What is the risk of incurring these costs to the business?

  3. Aligning international mobility to business needs:

Structured benchmarking study of international mobility talent management, reward strategy and process management to understand key trends, identify best practices and highlight opportunities.
    • What are the best practices in selection, performance management and retention?
    • How can reward policies support changing work practices an organisation?
    • How effective is performance in key operational areas of expatriate management, e.g. financial management, risk management etc?
