Concerns about data privacy and internet security have lead the European Union to strengthen regulations around the use of internet cookies.
In future, all internet users will be expected to give consent before information such as a cookie is stored or accessed on their terminal equipment and businesses will need to change their websites to meet these new requirements.
Our research showed that most internet users would be willing to pay to have internet cookies delivered to their computer managed for them, according to their preferences.
Conversely businesses do not have good estimates of the direct costs they would expect to incur in complying the regulatory requirements and few companies were fully prepared with plans on how to implement potential changes.
