Protecting the future

There are a number of long term pressures that should shape the way in which the Spending Review is undertaken including:

• Demographic trends which require the State to look at new ways to support an ageing population, in areas such as pensions, social care and extending working lives.
• Decarbonisation of the economy which will cost a huge amount over the next twenty years but needs to be done in a way which minimises the burden on the taxpayer by leveraging private sector involvement.
• Citizens’ expectations of public services continue to rise, generating further cost pressures and situations of excess demand.
