This report by the Smith Institute, in association with PwC and Newcastle University provides a detailed analysis of past and present policies to tackle regional inequalities.

By focusing on the coalition government’s pledge to rebalance the economy, it highlights the need for serious consideration of the implications on cutting regional funding for vital regeneration and transport projects.

In a comprehensive set of recommendations, the report:

• Spells out what Northern businesses and councils need to do now to keep the capacity to influence development in the North
• Makes detailed practical suggestions to Government on how to make the Local Enterprise Partnerships work, including a call for appropriate resources and investment
• Shows how a new growth policy for the North should work
