Renewables Deals is our annual publication on deal activity in the renewable energy sector globally. 2011 saw a very significant increase in the overall value of deals relative to 2010 up to $53 billion, so a 40% increase. Europe, including the UK was one of the major hunting grounds for renewables and cleantech deals in 2011.
The increase was driven primarily by a big increase in solar and energy efficiency transactions.
We’ve seen a big increase from investment from financial buyers, and on a geographical basis we’ve seen deal activity up very significantly in Europe, but interestingly also in North America.
We anticipate that economic conditions will continue to have an impact on deal activity in 2012, just as it did in 2011.
This is likely to impact those looking to raise debt to support transactions as well having an impact on the issue of affordability of renewable energy, which could drive further consolidation across the supply chain in an effort to reduce costs.
