Ian Powell signs the Copenhagen Communiqué on Climate Change

Ian Powell, UK Chairman and Senior partner joined over 250 business leaders worldwide in signing the Copenhagen Communiqué on Climate change which call for an ambitious, robust and equitable global deal on climate change.

The communiqué reinforces the message to governments that a large part of the international business community wants an effective international climate framework.

"I believe that, as the leading professional services firm, it is vital that PricewaterhouseCoopers sends the right signal to governments, policy makers, other businesses and to our own people on the issues of climate change" says Ian Powell. "I have signed the Copenhagen Communiqué because I feel strongly that long term economic prosperity depends on robust low carbon principles."

The communiqué outlines the key elements needed from Copenhagen including:

  • Credible measurement, reporting and verification of emissions.
  • Measures to deliver a robust global greenhouse gas emissions market as well as additional policy measures.
  • A framework for developing countries to accelerate the large-scale deployment of clean technologies through robust funding solutions, leading to the adoption of emission reduction commitments.
  • An adaptation framework and funding mechanism to assist the poorest countries and people who are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
  • Adaptation funding which needs to be additional, predictable, stable and adequate.
  • A mechanism to Reduce Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (REDD).
  • A comprehensive global approach to emissions from international aviation and shipping, and a clear strategy to commercialise carbon capture and storage, leading to widespread deployment.
