Cancun: Join the climate change debate

Global leaders are in Cancun for a major international climate change conference that’s become known as COP16/CMP6.

This short form stands for the 16th of Conference of the Parties* of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and for the 6th Conference of the Parties which itself serves as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP).

Among the issues being discussed in Cancun are:

  • the implications for business if a global deal isn’t met
  • the rate of carbon growth and economic growth
  • the future of carbon trading
  • the structure of funding and governance processes of the fast-start funding, which was committed under the Copenhagen Accord
  • adaptation and the role businesses need to play.

* ‘Parties’ refers to all the national states that signed and ratified both of the international treaties, committing to observe and comply with their terms on international cooperation against climate change.
