Gus is a Director in PwC's Sustainability and Climate Change Team. Over his 20 year career, Gus has focused on delivering large programmes of work with private and public sector organisations globally.
PwC sees a great opportunity to accelerate the development of a 'SuperGrid' and the uptake of renewable sources of electricity - in particular Concentrating Solar Thermal Power (CSP). Gus is now helping to drive forward PwC's work in this area. If adopted globally, it could prove to be a direct means of tackling climate change and energy security.
Through his work with The Climate Group and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, PwC has developed the Solar Potential concept to engage business and governments. Gus' longer term interest is to explore how this can provide an illustrative roadmap for how we might then deliver on Earth's Solar Potential globally in the coming years.
Human nature has a tendency sometimes to consider most things too difficult to attempt. Addressing climate change for many people falls in the too difficult bucket and this is one of the reasons, perhaps, that expectations are being lowered as we get closer to the COP 15 discussions.
I am going to Copenhagen to try and convince the players in the solar industry that we can and should play our part and to convince other stakeholders that solar can credibly play a large role in the final solution. Ambitious targets and aspirations can be achieved with what we have and what we know today. The only missing ingredient that is holding us back now is the will to engage in the challenge. I hope that the participants approach the discussions with a global "Yes, we can..." attitude, rather than a parochial "how can I preserve my status quo" mindset.
