"Climate change is too important an issue to leave to the policymakers. PwC has an important role to play to ensure the voice of business is heard in Copenhagen"

About Richard:

Richard leads the PwC climate change and carbon markets network. His background is in transactions and strategy on the interface between the public and private sector, though in recent years his focus has been on carbon markets, climate change policy and the implications for business and investment.

Richard on Copenhagen:

We have been tracking the global climate negotiations since Bali, feeding in analysis and ideas in areas such as carbon markets, finance and adaptation, at the same time as briefing our network and our clients on the implications for business.

I have managed to stay optimistic about the outcome in Copenhagen - I expect to see a reasonably ambitious political deal backed up by robust interim financing commitments to kick start early action - and I'm not too worried that it won't become legally binding until later in 2010.

So it is very exciting to see the growing line up of heads of state, booking into the Conference of Parties (COP). But it is too early to celebrate. We need to keep pressing home the key message from business - we need an ambitious long term deal to drive the huge investment required if we are to have any chance of delivering the 2 degrees C stabilisation goal.
