Transcript

Today’s Budget demonstrates a real shift in the Government’s focus on delivering more opportunity in the regions. The spending taps are on with literally billions committed to fund ideas, jobs, flood defences and not forgetting potholes. And it puts its money where its mouth is with the creation of a new Northern Treasury hub.

It was good to see the Chancellor levelling up via direct spending rather than tinkering with ineffective tax measures like enterprise zones. And there are further small positive steps towards a truly devolved system with regional funding put in the hands of local mayors and leaders.

With another Budget promised in the autumn, there’s still time for the Chancellor to be more radical and give tax raising powers directly to the regions - this would represent a mindset change towards levelling up and bring power closer to citizens.
