My Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games Volunteering Journey: Being a Pre-Games Volunteer

Herman Fung Manager, Assurance, PwC United Kingdom 22 Mar 2022

As soon as I heard the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games was happening on my doorstep, I knew I wanted to play a part. So, I volunteered to be a Pre-Games Volunteer. This meant I was part of a team helping to select 13,000 Games volunteers, known as the Commonwealth Collective.

My team included people from all walks of life and backgrounds, including many of my PwC colleagues. Applicants for the Commonwealth Collective were invited to the Library of Birmingham, where we gave them a fully immersive experience. It wasn’t a typical interview set up; there was an interactive exhibition about the Games, a short inspiring film, and finally a brief interview with someone like me.

The emphasis was on applicants telling us their own unique story and why they wanted to volunteer, rather than putting them under pressure and asking any difficult questions. Our goal was for every candidate to leave feeling inspired about the Games and excited about how it will showcase our region on the world stage.

Celebrating Birmingham’s diversity

We set out to recruit as many local volunteers as possible, with an ambition to celebrate the culturally and ethnically diverse communities across our region. Throughout the process I enjoyed hearing some of the fascinating stories from our applicants. One showed me a photo of herself as a child carrying the flag for her country at the Opening Ceremony of a previous Games and told me how much of an impact it had on her. I loved the experience and met some truly amazing people.

The Commonwealth Collective

I recently found out that I have also been selected as a Commonwealth Collective volunteer. I am thrilled to be part of the 13,000 strong team responsible for being the public face of Birmingham 2022. We will be the heart and soul of the Games experience, the first hello and final goodbye to more than one million spectators and thousands of athletes and officials. For me, the Games isn't just about sporting achievement, it’s a huge team effort, it's about communities coming together and it’s a lot of fun.

Volunteering is very important at PwC and we recently celebrated ten years of The PwC Foundation. Over the past decade teams have supported hundreds of charities and social enterprises, with colleagues volunteering their time and skills to increase our social impact across local communities. Being involved in the Games is one more way to give something back.

I am proud to play my part in a great Birmingham 2022 summer of sport and culture, both as a volunteer and as a spectator. See you there!
