ICO Your Data Matters campaign - PwC comments

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) launched its new Your Data Matters consumer data protection awareness campaign yesterday at its annual conference in Manchester. Fedelma Good, director in PwC’s data protection strategy, law and compliance team, who spoke at the conference and was heavily involved in the development of the campaign, commented:

“The imminent General Data Protection Regulation coming into force on 25th May represents the most significant changes to data protection law in 20 years and was designed to have consumer rights at its heart.

“The average adult today has around 100 data relationships to manage - including everything from personal health services and gym membership to retail loyalty schemes and insurance policies. This was one of the starting points for the Your Data Matters campaign. If you consider the practical implications of a change in laws governing the gathering and use of that consumer data, it’s clear that communication to individuals is essential. Everyone needs to know about their expanded data protection rights and new options open to them - such as data portability and the right to be forgotten - in order to build trust in today’s data-centred world.

“When we embarked on this initiative the aim was to engage organisations from a cross-section of industries to take into account a variety of issues and perspectives. I would encourage all consumer-facing organisations to keep abreast of this campaign via the ICO’s website and to share the content in communications with customers to help build trust and awareness around data use and individual rights."
