The UK tech industry recognised a year of strength and resilience, in the face of great disruption, at the annual UK tech awards ceremony in London, its 22nd year.
The awards, sponsored by PwC in association with Silicon Valley Bank, owned and organised by Ford Sinclair Ltd, reflect the contribution of public, private and innovative high-growth home-grown tech companies.
Jass Sarai, PwC UK Technology, Media, and Telecoms Leader, said:
“The UK’s tech industry has shown amazing resilience over the past year in the face of enormous challenges. It has helped us to work anywhere, educate our children, socialise with friends, entertain ourselves, shop, access virtual health services, and stay connected.
“As economies recover, the UK tech sector will continue to grow and flourish. There are unprecedented levels of investment in the UK tech sector, which hit a record high in 2020, and recent research from the government shows that the UK is now home to over 100 Unicorns, with one being added every week in 2021. The shortlisted organisations are a perfect reflection of the vibrancy in the sector and recognise some stand-out candidates who have embraced uncertainty and been agile enough to emerge stronger.”
Simon Bumfrey, Head of Relationship Banking Europe at Silicon Valley Bank said:
“2021 has been a standout year for the UK’s innovation economy in many ways. The UK tech awards celebrate the ecosystem’s leading companies and individuals that have helped shape our innovation economy to the envy of many countries around the world. The shortlisted nominees and winners have displayed incredible vision, leadership, and growth, and we are delighted to recognise their achievements in helping to endorse the UK’s reputation as a global leader in innovation.
Bumfrey added, “It’s important to recognise the role that technology has played during the pandemic. I am delighted that we have a Tech for Good award category as innovation and life sciences have been instrumental in helping society through this life-changing period. There is also real intent from the industry to provide access to innovation across all diverse backgrounds. Silicon Valley Bank in partnership with clients, partners, regulators and charities are working to make change happen fast and we’re optimistic that through continued commitment and accountability, we will make the UK the most diverse innovation ecosystem in the world.”
