On 10th October, World Mental Health Day helped to raise global awareness of mental health issues. At PwC we support this focus not only on this day, but every day of the year as we explore how we can raise awareness starting with our own people, in addition to linking with the wider business community.
PwC hosted two events:
The first one was co-hosted with Barclays, in support of Barclays' established "This Is Me" campaign and our own "Green Light to Talk" initiative. It followed an event we held together in June 2016 on the same topic to really encourage the debate with North West employers.
We were joined by more than 20 guests representing some of the North West's largest organisations, and we were delighted to be joined by Angela Harrington, Head of Work and Skills at Manchester City Council, and Elizabeth Simpson, Service Director for Manchester MIND Charity. Angela shared more about the importance of tackling mental health from the perspective of the Manchester region, but also MCC as a major employer, and Elizabeth talked about the training and support her team deliver to businesses.
Following which PwC held an internal lunch for employees, where the focus was on how PwC colleagues can support each other on mental health awareness and illness. PwC was joined by representatives from the Samaritans who highlighted the need for greater encouragement to share experiences not just between those attending but much wider across the business.
Gareth Henty who co-leads our North West responsible business programme commented;
"It was fantastic to have so many people around the table this morning, representing tens of thousands of employees, to debate the really important area of mental health in the workplace. Together we can remove the stigma around mental health and, starting with the larger organisations and the City Council, make a real difference across the community by reaching SMEs and more hard to reach populations. We will continue to gain momentum from here working in partnership with today's group - thank you to Barclays and everyone who joined us".
