Towards recovery…..PwC Technical Update Seminar 2021

COVID-19 and Brexit have presented major challenges and learnings for us all. It’s forced us to look at how we operate and has pushed us to find solutions quickly - driving transformation.   As we start down the road to recovery, we need to keep a handle on what changes might be coming down the line. 

PwC Technical Update Seminar (TUS) delivers essential insights for finance and tax professionals across Northern Ireland, giving you and your teams an opportunity to keep up to date on current issues and legislative changes.  

Specifically developed for accountants and tax practitioners in business, TUS will be led by experts from across PwC's audit, consulting, deals and tax practices, and will deliver a range of updates as follows: 


  • Economic Update - a look at the latest regional, and global economic trends
  • The Business Landscape - reflections on the issues faced by businesses over the past 18 months, how funders are reacting and thoughts on preparing to overcome the challenges which remain ahead
  • Corporate Tax Update - an update on the corporate tax developments over the past year, drawing out some broader themes and key updates from the UK Government on tax incentives and initiatives available to businesses for continued investment and growth, as well as highlight some global led initiatives on tax 
  • Employment Tax Update - review the latest developments in the employment taxes space and what employers need to be thinking about going forward
  • Indirect Tax Update -  address the latest VAT developments and the indirect tax aspects of the NI Protocol
  • Employment Law Update -  consider the HR and employment law obligations in light of the current climate and the shift to hybrid working
  • Audit and Financial Accounting Standards Update - provide insights into the latest accounting standards

Format: With future uncertainty around COVID-19 restrictions and the safety of delegates in mind, the 2021 PwC Technical Update Seminar will be delivered virtually.

Cost: The 2021 TUS will be delivered free of charge for delegates.

The speakers


David Armstrong – PwC Partner

David is a Partner in PwC and studied economics at Oxford (MPhil) and Warwick (PhD) universities.  He leads our work in Northern Ireland for public sector clients and is also responsible for the work PwC UK undertakes for Whitehall departments in relation to international development and trade.  He recently led a major strategic review for PwC on behalf of the UK Department for International Trade in relation to the UK’s approach to foreign direct investment.  He has published widely on economic and policy issues and is a regular commentator on the Northern Ireland economy.  

Áine O’Hare – PwC Partner in Tax

Áine is a PwC partner and head of our Tax business in Northern Ireland. She has over 17 years’ experience advising local companies and multinational groups on a full range of UK tax issues. Áine is well known in the local market as an innovative and strategic tax advisor, as well as being recognised globally having previously worked in Sydney as a key member of the PwC Global Tax team. Over the years, she has advised on a wide-range of global tax-led solutions including tax compliance, audit of tax, tax efficient structuring, corporate acquisitions, tax due diligence, SPA negotiation, refinancing and cross-border investments.

David Strachan - PwC Director, Audit

David is a director in our audit practice, working with clients across multiple sectors and ranging from family businesses through to large listed groups.  David qualified with the firm in Glasgow, before moving to the Edinburgh office and completing a secondment to Australia.  For the past 4 years he has been based in Belfast, supporting our clients in the delivery of a range of audit and non-audit engagements. 

James Davidson – PwC Senior Manager

James leads our Business Restructuring Services team within PwC’s Deals practice in Northern Ireland. He has extensive experience of advising corporates, lenders and public sector clients through difficult periods or times of rapid change. James works across a wide range of industries and provides support to clients from owner managed SMEs to larger international organisations. 

Claire Gregory – PwC Senior Manager in Employment Tax

Claire is a senior manager in our employment tax practice. She advises businesses from various industries on managing their employment tax risks and employment costs.

Michael McNeill – PwC Senior Manager in VAT

Michael is a senior manager in our VAT practice. He advises clients from various industries and sectors on VAT, from issues around compliance to ensuring new projects or developments are as VAT efficient as possible.

Majella Culbert – PwC Senior Manager and Solicitor in Employment Law

Majella is a senior manager and solicitor in PwC Belfast and leads the Northern Ireland employment law team.  Majella is qualified to practice in Northern Ireland and is an expert in RoI employment law having completed a diploma in RoI employment law in 2013.  She has specialised in employment law since qualification.  Majella also gained a Human Rights MSc in 2010 and is CIPD qualified.  She has over fifteen years of experience of acting on behalf of a predominantly employer client base in relation to all aspects of employment law.
