Natracare, the brand developed by Bristol company Bodywise (UK) Ltd, the global leader in disposable organic and natural feminine hygiene products, is one of four finalists to have secured a place in the finals of the under £30m category of the West of England Business of the Year Awards, sponsored by PwC.
The company was founded as a result of environmentalist and designer, Susie Hewson’s concerns about the toxic pollution created by the processing and manufacturing of conventional sanitary products and the industry’s immovability with respect to the health and wellbeing of women using their products.
In response she created a feminine hygiene range free from plastics, chlorine bleaching, chemical additives, dyes, fragrances and other synthetic irritants.
The company has achieved consistent growth in sales and Natracare products are now sold directly to more than 70 countries over 6 continents. Today, Natracare’s brand offering has grown to 30 items including feminine hygiene products, baby wipes, makeup removal wipes, incontinence pads, maternity and nursing pads.
Turnover for FY17 was £14.5m - an increase of 25% over the previous year, and net profit is up from £3.3m to £4.5m - an increase of 38%.
Opportunities for the future include continuing to build brand loyalty in Asia where there is a growing demand for organic and natural personal care products, and working closely with advocate groups around the world to educate and create new brand awareness and make Natracare available to as many women as possible worldwide.
The company doesn’t just have a strong social conscience when it comes to its products, it also gets involved in social responsibility projects around the world and in the last 15 months has donated over £56,000 to support local initiatives.
Susie Hewson, founder of Bodywise, said: ““It’s fantastic to be recognised as a successful company amongst such an incredible pool of talent here in the South West. I’m honoured to be running a business according to sustainable and ethical principles, and taking the Natracare brand to the world markets whilst at the same time giving back to the area I love.”
Nick Morgan, head of tax at PwC West & Wales said: “The independent judges were pleased to shortlist Bodywise (UK) Ltd as one of four worthy finalists in the under £30m category in the Business of the Year Awards. The judges were impressed by the company’s green ethos and social conscience, strong financial performance and growing international customer base”.
