Working in Tax

You’ll work with a range of clients from day one to understand their business affairs and discuss how tax rules apply to them. This could be with entrepreneurs or individual employees; advising on complex personal tax issues and implications of international assignments. Or with large multinationals; from local and overseas corporate tax compliance, to the tax implications of business decisions and how they reward their people.

We’ll support you to apply your knowledge, to develop your network and understand the breadth of the tax services we provide to our clients. You’ll also develop key professional and transferable skills right from the start, giving you the foundation to develop your career as an agile and client focused tax professional.

But that’s just the start - our Tax practice is a varied and exciting place to be and we pride ourselves on career mobility.

The Legal experience

The Tax experience

We take the time to ensure that you’re fully prepared for client engagements and can talk confidently about our complete Tax offering - from the more traditional Tax processes, through to the revolutionary technologies we can offer our clients. Our approach combines a market-leading innovative internal tax training programme with an accelerated professional qualifications pathway to allow you to apply your expertise directly to client issues early in your journey.

You’ll also use the latest technology to support your work. Whether that’s communicating to clients and their employees in another country, implementing new pay structures in line with tax rules or advising businesses on their corporate tax obligations.

You can choose to apply to our Tax teams through two routes; our core Tax programme, where you’ll experience a number of areas of Tax, or through our alternative Tax programmes where you’ll specialise from day one.

Core Tax programme

Working in core Tax gives you the opportunity to rotate across our Direct, and Indirect Tax teams in the first two years of your PwC journey.

This could involve working in Direct Tax to help clients - from FTSE 100 companies and global organisations, to budding entrepreneurs and high-net worth individuals - manage their tax risk and comply with complex legislation.

As part of our Indirect Tax practice, you could be involved in everything from advising clients on the VAT implications of their UK activities to a global project looking at the clients’ supply chain, to considering the impact of case law developments, or advising on a merger or acquisition.

In addition to our core Tax programme, you can choose to apply for a number of other Tax programmes; where you’ll join an individual team from day one. See details in the other tabs for opportunities in Tax Compliance and Accounting Services.

Joining as a School or College Leaver

Depending on the Tax team you join, you'll enjoy plenty of practical, on-the-job training while studying towards a professional qualification which will vary depending on the programme. Many of our School Leavers will work with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) to secure the Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business (CFAB) or study towards the ATT (Association of Tax Technicians) as a core part of their programme.

Along the way you’ll have access to a dedicated Professional Qualifications team, and have access to a strong support network which will include - external Tutors and Talent Coaches, and your career coach, buddies and peers from PwC. All of them will be familiar with what you’re going through, as they’ll have also completed professional qualifications.

Life in Tax

Early in your career you'll have the opportunity to gain a breadth of experience across some of our core tax specialisms - giving you the opportunity to gain invaluable knowledge and build your network.

On our core Tax programme you’ll then become aligned to a particular part of our Tax practice in your third year. This breadth of experience, together with an agile mindset, is an important part of working in Tax. You’ll learn from different clients and develop your transferable professional skills by working with a range of teams. We encourage you to bring your own strengths and experiences to each team you work with, and deliver ideas and suggestions to foster collaboration.

As a predominantly office based team, this gives you the opportunity to build vital colleague relationships and inclusive environments. Across our Tax practice we champion Feel Good Friday - an initiative to highlight some of our personal achievements each week. We often have the most office stability across PwC teams, with a real focus on empowering your day through flexibility working in tandem with your commitments and passions outside of work. We pride ourselves on this team culture across every office and our social events are testament to this.

The future of Tax

In Tax, the use of data analytics for both tax compliance and tax consulting will soon become the norm; tax professionals will also be data analysts. Information previously held in paper files can now be collected in seconds, freeing up our professionals to do strategic work by using this data in new ways. We’re now able to analyse entire data sets, as opposed to smaller samples, and make decisions quicker and with increased accuracy.

Over the next few years, we’ll fundamentally transform the way we go about tax compliance. This transformation will allow you, our future professionals, to focus more on the logic behind the data queries and fine tune your analytical skills. In turn enhancing your knowledge of technical tax, different client industries and business processes. It’s about working smarter, and using innovation and technology to make that happen.
