Working in Consulting

You’ll get to work closely with the best in industry, from financial services,  government and health to the private sector within the UK and potentially abroad. Our clients might want us to help them enter new markets, address the challenges created by organisational change, or draw up a sustainability strategy that aligns their commercial objectives with broader environmental and social concerns.

You can choose to start in Management Consulting, where you’ll build core skills on a two-year market-leading programme. You’ll have the opportunity to learn about what we do across our different consulting business areas and work with clients to drive innovation and growth, manage costs and operate effectively. This will help you decide where you might specialise within core Consulting.

The Consulting experience

You’ll typically find yourself working as part of a team of anything from two to 200 people on projects based anywhere from the UK to the USA, Middle East or Africa. You’ll likely spend time with clients at their base locations dealing with issues as they arise, and gaining valuable exposure to different types of projects, internal and external, and diverse industries. Our client projects are resourced nationally so expect to work away from your home office.

As a Junior Management Consultant, we’ll support you to study for a nationally recognised professional qualification whilst you’re also learning the ropes by working with our internal teams. You’ll gain valuable on-the-job experience while obtaining coaching from experts in their field, which will equip you with the skills to really make a difference. Later on, you may also have the opportunity to gain exposure to client work such as research, collecting and analysing data, project management and report writing. You could find yourself based in the office, working remotely or potentially at a client's office, depending on where you’re needed the most.

After the scheme, you’ll be taken through our promotion process which will assess your eligibility to move on to the next stage of your career. If successful, you’ll join our Management Consulting graduate programme. You’ll undertake learning in a variety of specialist areas, from Finance, Risk and Technology to Operations and People and Organisation.

There’s more to our people than intellect alone. To thrive in our practice, you'll need to welcome change. And you’ll not only be analytical and numerate, you’ll also be articulate and confident when it comes to saying what you think. An open mind and a strong team ethic are vital too.

In Consulting you’ll complete the Junior Management Consulting Level 4 apprenticeship over 2 years. Our training provider, Kaplan has created a bespoke exam course to equip you with the technical knowledge required for the apprenticeship.

The apprenticeship consists of 55 knowledge, skills and behaviours a junior management consultant is expected to acquire throughout the programme.  The exam courses, skills days and work experience obtained in your first 15 -18 months will allow you to acquire these.  They’ll then need to be demonstrated in the end point assessment, which consists of a written portfolio of evidence based on your work experience in those last 6-9 months, followed by a presentation and interview.

The minimum requirements are 112 UCAS tariff from up to 3 full A-Levels (or equivalent qualifications), and a Grade 4 or above in GCSE English Language and Mathematics (or equivalent).

Networking and building relationships is at the core of Consulting and it’s this breath of clients which sets PwC Consulting apart. Who knows where your next project might be heading?

The future of Consulting

Our success as a top Consulting practice is down to our people. We invest and empower each and every Consultant throughout their career. We use some of the most advanced technologies to bring together our teams - wherever they are based in the world.
Recent successes include the introduction of PerformPlus. Global teams come together for 15 minutes every day to talk about individual performance metrics. Those conversations enable them to see clearly if they're on track to deliver the customer success vision. They share their own and others’ successes and are able to raise any issues with the group to help resolve them.
Working in this very agile and responsive way, we’re able to influence small behaviours that have big results.

We help our clients navigate the global shifts that are reshaping the world we live in, such as climate change and technological breakthroughs. What are the implications for their organisations, industries and wider society, right now and in the future? And how can we support them in responding to these?

We have to reimagine the possible to stay ahead, but to survive and thrive in the digital revolution, we must balance business understanding with technology innovation and human insight.
