Working in Cyber Security

In our UK Cyber Security team we’re passionate about building a secure digital society. We’re in a unique position to work with organisations to drive a tangible difference to their cyber security and are recognised as a leading adviser in this area.

We also have a role to play in researching and disrupting both our industry and those who target our society. To do so we work with business leaders, government, educators, regulators and industry groups.

You’ll be part of a growing practice, working in one of our specialist cyber security teams.

Cyber specialist

Our specialist advisory teams are focused on supporting highly technical specialisms which help our clients to detect and respond to vulnerabilities in their IT environments.

A career in our Cyber Risk Advisory team will provide you with the opportunity to help our clients deal with some of the most urgent issues facing businesses and governments today.

We help organisations from all sectors operate securely in the digital world. Our advisors help clients reduce their exposure to threats, improve their defences and respond to cyber incidents. We also help our clients address the legal issues around breaches, data protection and privacy and implement a culture and environment where people understand how to behave securely and do the right thing.

Our IdAM team focuses on helping our clients design, implement and operate effective access controls to systems and critical assets that protect against threats, support business objectives and enable growth. This includes:

  • working with prospective clients to agree, scope and plan the delivery phase of engagements
  • providing technical skills to help clients implement, support and manage IdAM within their organisations
  • delivering cyber security and cyber risk assignments
  • providing our clients with trusted advice, rooted in a pragmatic understanding of their business situation and objectives, to help them navigate complex, risk-driven Cyber decisions.

Our Cyber Incident Response team supports clients across our global network to respond, remediate and recover from cyber attacks. They help clients to prepare and recover through a variety of complementary technical services. This includes:

  • performing high quality technical analysis, helping our clients to understand what happened during a cyber security incident or data breach
  • capability development (including improvements to our cloud-based analysis platform), proposition development and thought leadership initiatives
  • managing risk appropriately throughout the project lifecycle, following PwC’s processes for client and engagement acceptance.

The Cyber Security Experience

There are many career options in cyber security. For those interested in technology, systems and networks, you’ll get to monitor and detect network abnormalities, respond to incidents, learn how to generate and apply threat intelligence, advise on identity and access management, support organisations in their response to a crisis or perhaps become an ethical hacker.

You could be responsible for unpicking breach indicators from live memory captures, deploying host and network monitoring agents across an enterprise, reverse engineering custom malware samples or penetrating client networks and systems to find threats and vulnerabilities.

If you’re interested and passionate about cyber security but feel more aligned to dealing in the business risk side, you’ll help our clients understand the benefits of managing potential risks. This could include helping with strategy, evaluating their landscape, designing target operating models, or implementing new solutions.

It’s a role where you’ll help clients resolve uncertainty and manage the complex cyber security matters they face on a daily basis.

Joining as a graduate

Whichever path you choose, as your skills develop, you’ll get the opportunity to help coordinate an engagement team, develop new service offerings, or maybe help advise a FTSE 100 Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) on developing a cyber security programme.

A curious mind and a genuine passion for cyber security is expected – the pace of change in this industry sector is so high that candidates will need to spend personal time keeping informed of changes and trends by reading industry sources, such as social media, blogs and media reporting.

Whichever cyber area you join, you’ll build up your technical knowledge and experience to be an effective technical cyber security expert.

Life in Cyber Security
