Making a difference: One Firm One Day 2018

Setting the scene

We know that many of our people want to ‘give something back’ to society, whilst developing their skills, so we continue to offer a significant amount of time – up to six days per year - for any of our staff or partners to volunteer with our strategic community partners. We aim to collectively volunteer at least 50,000 hours each year, and this year has seen a total of 66,402 hours reaching a staggering 23,500 beneficiaries.

One way our staff volunteer is through One Firm One Day (OFOD), our annual firmwide fundraising and volunteering event. Staff across the UK are encouraged to join together and take part in giving something back to our local communities.

"By giving something back to local communities we can all play our part in advancing social mobility and supporting our community partners. A huge ‘Thank You’ to everyone involved on their behalf.”

David AdairHead of Community Engagement

How we helped

More than 170 teams took part, making it the most widely-participated OFOD to date, in a range of activities aligned with this year’s theme of Empowering Communities, which covers our approach to social mobility, social enterprise, and mental health and wellbeing.

From pumpkin planting in the Channel Islands to scaling mountains in the Three Peaks challenge, and countless fundraising activities across our regions, staff have helped raise £59,432 through the PwC Foundation and support 1,395 beneficiaries across the UK.

Across the UK we see many of our staff working with chosen charitable partners, PwC Social Entrepreneurs Club members, schools and colleges, as well as other organisations.

This year’s OFOD coincided with Mental Health Awareness Week, which is widely supported by staff across PwC, and as a result saw a lot of activities supporting mental health and wellbeing. This included One Firm One Brew events inviting staff across our offices to take time out to discuss mental health whilst helping to raise money for Samaritans, PwC's nominated mental health and wellbeing partner. Together we raised £10,000 through One Firm, One Brew events, as well as £17,000 overall across the network with One Firm, One Day.

Making a difference

With a record number of staff taking part in OFOD this year, a total of 3,166 volunteers donated 21,493 hours as part of OFOD.

We have seen our activities have a far reaching impact on the communities and organisations we work with. One example of the impact we have made was in the North where 70 volunteers from across Yorkshire and the North West took part in a Dragons Den initiative with schools and reached an impressive 600 students in one day.

Elsewhere we held an event with Charter School in Southwark to share our skills and expertise with pupils. This had a particular focus on women and tech, running Data and Analytics (D&A) workshops for Year 9 students, covering topics such as Financial Services, Machine Learning, Data Management (GDPR) and Data Visualisation.
