PwC drives change in communities

Setting the scene

Drivers for Change is a charity bringing together young people aged 18-26 interested  in exploring how social enterprise, business and the arts can come together to make a difference in UK communities. It was inspired by the world’s biggest enterprise journey, Jagriti Yatra in India, which has taken over 3,000 young people on a 14-day tour of India and been the catalyst for a number of social action projects.

Between 21 June and 2 July 2018, 100 creative and entrepreneurial young people took part in the first ever Drivers for Change journey. Participants came from all corners of the UK, along with 18 people from overseas, thanks to the help of the British Council. They visited eight towns and cities in England, Scotland and Wales, meeting artists and entrepreneurs who are driving place-based change around the country.

“Cross sector collaboration, as exemplified by Drivers for Change, is a key part of our purpose at PwC. We also recognise the importance of developing an entrepreneurial spirit in our future leaders.”

How we helped

PwC was the major corporate supporter of the programme, alongside the British Council, and helped shape as well as deliver the experience, with several of our people taking part as both participants and group facilitators.

Recognising the importance of developing an entrepreneurial spirit in our future leaders is part of our Purpose, as well as collaborating across different sectors, regions and diverse groups.

Making a difference

During the unique journey, Drivers for Change hosted project visits, workshops and talks that explored the different approaches to positive social change that are happening in the UK.

As a result of the journey, the participants have developed vibrant networks and newly acquired skills and return to their communities inspired to play their part in place-based social change. Some of the change drivers will go on to start new projects such as social enterprises or creating a network of youth-led social impact projects.

A proportion of the Drivers for Change participants came from each of the locations visited; they now go home to their communities connected to each other and connected with those who supported the visits in their towns and cities. The ambition is that everyone involved in the journey shares their experience and uses it to benefit their communities, creating a ripple effect of inspiration and tangible links to social action opportunities around the UK.

"Drivers for Change is an innovative way to engage with a number of our key stakeholders across the UK and inspire a diverse group of young people around the role of business in society today."
