Paul Hare: Continuous improvement

Can you tell us about your journey to PwC?

Before Audit, my career looked very different. I started driving lorries across Europe during the holidays while at university in Aberdeen, and continued for about three years after. It was only when a friend who worked at PwC Channel Islands told me about the exciting work he did that I made the move into Audit. I joined a small intake of about 12 people in the Guernsey office, studying for my chartered accountancy exams on the graduate scheme, and although I was a little bit older than the usual graduate entry, I really enjoyed mixing work with study. From there, I eventually made a move back to Scotland and the Edinburgh office in 2013, joining the Asset Wealth Management (AWM) audit team.

What role do you do now?

I joined the Continuous Improvement team on a two-year secondment from AWM in 2025. The team has a broad remit, sitting right across the firm’s quality agenda. A lot of what I do centres on root cause analysis: digging into key findings from external and internal reviews to understand why something happened and, more importantly, how we can prevent it from happening again. We also spend time looking at and sharing good practice, which helps enhance audit quality. Day to day, you’ll find me deep diving into metrics, comparing engagement data against benchmarks and pulling together reports.

What do you enjoy most about working in Continuous Improvement?

For me, it’s the variety; No two days really look the same. I’m always learning, and the role gives me the chance to speak with so many people every day and get to know different teams and clients. I really enjoy understanding what matters to them and what their priorities are. That mix of fresh challenges, constant learning, and the people you meet along the way is what I love about my job, and what keeps me looking forward to coming into work each day.
