Phones 4u

Notice to all employees - 18 January 2017

We were appointed over certain companies as joint administrators within the Phones4U group (a large independent retailer of mobile phones and accessories) as summarised in the file attached here.

Further information and contact details are avalible using the options at the bottom of this page.

If you are a Jump 4U customer, please refer to information in the following link: Jump 4U Limited

Press releases are available (see left panel) which confirm the following key transactions:

  • Dixons Carphone offered roles to all people in the Phones 4U concessions located in Dixons Carphone outlets. This agreement relates solely to staff and does not include the sale of any stock, chattels or the Phones 4U brand name, thereby securing continued employment for more than 800 people.
  • A deal has been agreed with Vodafone UK which will see the mobile network firm take on 140 of the Phones 4u stores together with preservation of 887 jobs for store employees across the UK. The stores will be re-branded to Vodafone stores over the coming weeks following a period of transition.
  • A deal has been agreed with EE which will see the mobile network firm acquire 58 Phones 4u stores, preserving 359 jobs. The stores will be re-branded to EE in due course.

The transactions with Vodafone and EE were subject to court approval which has now been received and these transactions are now being finalised.

Unfortunately, there is limited interest in the balance of the estate from parties considering going concern offers. This comprises 362 stores. Regretfully, as a result, the administrators announce that those stores will close permanently and 1697 staff employed at these locations will be made redundant. Another 720 people have been retained in the short term to assist with the closure programme.

For a full list of store closures please see the PwC press release from 23 September 2014.

Jonathan Haigh, real estate director at PwC, has confirmed the appointment of Prime Retail Property Consultants as advisers to the joint administrators on the Phones 4u property portfolio. Prime Retail's role is to assist the joint administrators' team in the identification and realisation of value from the leasehold estate. PwC is already experiencing considerable demand from parties interested in taking stores- both from retailers looking to take on lease assignments and landlords exploring lease surrenders.
